Traveling
The movement speed listed on a character sheet/stat block is for a burst of energy in the moment and not meant to indicate sustained effort. A fast pace makes characters less perceptive, while a slow pace makes it possible to sneak around and to search an area more carefully.
It’s assumed that characters travel for 8 hours in a day in the below values. They can push beyond this limit at the risk of exhaustion. For each additional hour of travel beyond 8, the characters cover the appropriate distance for their set pace. At the end of the hour each character must make a Constitution saving throw at a DC of 10 plus 1 for each hour past 8. On a failed saving throw the character suffers one level of exhaustion.
Travel in ground vehicles is affected by the rules as normal. Travel by sea is entirely different and we’re not talking about that here.
| Pace | Minute | Hour | Day | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fast | 400 feet | 4 miles | 30 miles | -5 penalty to passive Wisdom (Perception) |
| Normal | 300 feet | 3 miles | 24 miles | |
| Slow | 200 feet | 2 miles | 18 miles | Able to use Stealth |
Shit You Can Do While Traveling
When a character is performing other tasks they are considered occupied and not focused on watching for danger. Their passive perception will not be counted (or will be penalized) when determining if the group notices a hidden threat. The following activities are almost always available while traveling:
- Navigate: try to prevent the group from getting lost. Survival check.
- Draw Maps: make a map to record progress and help get back on course. No check required.
- Track: follow some tracks. Survival check.
- Forage: keep an eye out for sources of food and water. Survival check.
The party in this campaign currently has not one, but 2 pretty sweet gypsy style camper wagons. This affords more flexibility of actions available, so feel free to suggest an action that you think is reasonable.
Average distances during the dark ages:
And just for a bit of amusing historical context here’s some travel and distance information from historic Europe.
- villages: 2.5 hours apart = 7.5 miles
- towns: 7.5 hours apart = 22.5 miles
- cities: 3 days apart = 72 miles
